Tron

About the project

Digital fashion work inspired by Tron: Legacy.

Personal project exploring the process of creating digital fashion. Going from concepting and sketching, through modelling, to texturing, lighting and rendering.

This project allowed me to expand my skills and deepen my knowledge useful for the digital fashion industry.

I started this project by researching how the costumes were made for the film. I found official photos and videos and also some unofficial costume breakdowns.

I wanted to stay true to the intended style of the film. I studied the costume design language and noticed many important elements.

I took notes on materials as well as structure. For example, the designers mentioned they used synthetic materials exclusively and stayed away from natural fibers. This decision was made to stay consistent with the futuristic world in the film.

With the knowledge gathered, I started sketching some ideas. I tried different approaches, like starting with the light placement and then adding the shape of the clothes or the opposite, where I sketched the shapes of the fabric pieces and then added the light placement.

I settled on one of the finished designs, which I felt could elevate the costumes but would still fit nicely in the film.

I decided on a bodysuit and one-shoulder cape design.

I then used Marvellous Designer and started modelling the outfit. Most of the process resembles real-life sewing of clothes. I want through a few iterations of the design, especially of the suit.

Once I was done I organised the UVs and exported into Substance Painter.

In Substance Painter I played around with different materials and made myself a new hexagonal material inspired by the materials used the film.

Then I brought it all together in Cinema 4D and set up the materials in Redshift. I added the outfit to a scene I made and added lights. Then I made a few camera tracks and animated their movement.

Once I had everything set up I went over the render settings. And then I started rendering! The whole process takes a while but I am really happy with the end result.
